How to read an MOT history

Mileage, advisories and failures tell you a lot about how a car has been looked after.

Mileage

Each MOT records the mileage. It should rise steadily. A drop, or a long gap, is worth asking about.

Advisories and failures

Advisories are things the tester noticed that weren't bad enough to fail. Repeated advisories for the same part (tyres, brake pipes, corrosion) suggest it hasn't been fixed.

A failure followed by a pass a few days later usually means the problem was repaired.

On Motorfolk

Vehicle Passport shows MOT details with their source and date. In this local prototype the MOT data is simulated and labelled as such.
